Modernism is considered to be the extreme height of tension between the individual and the modern life, as the changing values of the scientifically and technologically advanced modern life have evolved a society full of superfluous trivialities, and as a result, an ever widening generation gap has become the new reality of the modern life, where the older generation is lamenting over the loss of their political and moral ideals, while the younger generation is disillusioned from their future and are spiritually wounded. To make matters worse, this split persona of the individual finds himself unequivocally bound to bore the brunt of all the inhumane rules and regulations of the modern life. All of these intensities add up to make the situation utterly hypertense and almost unbearable. This article will ponder this depicted tension between the individual and the modern life and the resulting generation gap in light of Dr. Faheem Azmi’s (1935-2004) Urdu novel Destination Manhole (1989).
