Abstract

Translations of creative literature are very valuable contributions to the literary canon, and esteemed critics such as Wordsworth argued that creative writings should be exempt from scrutiny. West holds the belief that creation surpasses translation. Undoubtedly, the significance of translations cannot be denied. Translations serve as a gateway to other languages, allowing us to explore new realms of literature. Literary journals are the optimal medium for publishing translations. Starting with the twentieth century, Urdu literary journals have consistently emphasised the importance of translation in all its forms. Majils Tarqi e Adab’s literary journal "Sahifa" is among them, which is being published since 1957. The inaugural edition of this journal featured a translation of a French short tale, and translations have remained an integral component of the publication ever since. This essay aims to demonstrate the role of Urdu translation in the tradition of short story writing. 'Sahifa' has translated short stories written by renowned and esteemed authors from many backgrounds including French, Russian, English, American, and Bengali, both contemporary and classic.
