A Feminist Thematic, Stylistic and Comparative Study of Selected Classical and Contemporary Urdu Women Poets

Abstract

This research explores the evolution and significance of women poets in Urdu literature, tracing their journey from classical to modern times. It highlights how, despite being historically marginalized and often omitted from literary anthologies, women have continuously contributed to the richness and diversity of Urdu poetry. Beginning with early figures like Empress Noor Jahan, Princess Zeb-un-Nisa, and Mah Laqa Bai, the study acknowledges their silent yet impactful presence, often expressed through veiled metaphors and refined aesthetics. Moving into the modern era, the abstract underscores the transformative roles of poets such as Parveen Shakir, Fahmida Riaz, and Noshi Gilani, who not only voiced personal emotions but also addressed socio-political issues, gender identity, and existential dilemmas. The research emphasizes the shift from romantic idealism to intellectual agency, revealing how modern women poets have reclaimed poetic space and reshaped the literary landscape. This comparative study ultimately illustrates that while classical poets laid the foundation for feminine expression in Urdu poetry, contemporary voices have expanded it into a powerful, conscious, and dynamic literary force.
