The Traditions of Balochi Lexicography: An Analytical Study

Abstract

Balochi, a language spoken primarily in Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan, has a rich linguistic heritage yet remains understudied in comparison to other languages in the region. Lexicography, the systematic creation of dictionaries, plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting a language. This abstract provides an overview of the current state of Balochi lexicography, highlighting existing dictionaries, challenges faced by lexicographers, and future directions for research. The history of Balochi lexicography is relatively short. Early dictionaries were primarily limited in scope and focused on specific domains or dialects. Notable contributions include the work of I.R. Bruce, who published a Balochi-English vocabulary in 1874, and the more comprehensive Balochi-English- and Urdu Dictionary by Atta Shahd, Balochi Dictionary by Syed Zahoor Shah Hashmi. However, these dictionaries often lacked detailed etymological information and grammatical analysis.
