Abstract

This research paper delves into the intellectual legacy of Allama Dr. Muhammad Iqbal (1877–1938) and his efforts to chart a course for the rejuvenation of Indian Muslims, who were facing a period of decline, despair and intellectual stagnation. Iqbal, through a comparative study of Eastern and Western civilizations, identified the key reasons for the socio-political and spiritual defeat of Muslims, particularly in the context of British colonial rule and the broader global trends of materialism and secularism. His philosophy centers on the development of "Khudi" (selfhood) and spiritual consciousness as tools to inspire self-confidence, unity, and intellectual revival among the youth. This paper critically examines the causes of Muslim decline from Iqbal's perspective, taking into account historical, social and religious factors. Moreover, Iqbal’s proposed solutions—rooted in a return to Islamic values, creative thought and social reform—are presented as a pathway for overcoming the challenges facing the Muslim world. The study highlights the relevance of Iqbal’s ideas in contemporary times, offering a philosophical and practical framework for the revival of Muslim communities through self-realization and empowerment.
