A Critical Review of Abdullah Hussain Novelet “Kaid”

Abstract

In the decade of 1970s Abdullah Hussain was one of the important names who cleansed Urdu of supernatural elements and made it an embodiment of human society. In his novelet “Kaid” (captivity), the word “Kaid” has been used as a central symbol and never loses its grip on the character of the story. In this novel he uses religion and mullah’s character’s influence on the politics and society of the Subcontinent as a basic concept as to how the feudalist and affluent segments of the society exploit the poor people and also how the male dominant society keeps the woman under control. All the primary and secondary characters of this novel show the society in its true colors where loot, plunder and greed are the order of the day. The following article is an effort to throw light on the thematic and artistic qualities of the novelist.
