Abstract

This research analyzes the complex representation of femininity in the poetry of Rashida Ayan, a renowned Urdu poet who delves deeply into gender dynamics and social conventions. By examining her important poems like "Karb-e-Tanhai," "Laxman Rekha," "Harf-e-Ulfat," "Ghar," "Mujasma Azadi," and "Qalam Bolta Hai," the study explores the intricate levels of a woman's sense of self, her challenges in the face of oppression, and her journey towards self-discovery and independence. Rashida Ayan skillfully utilizes different metaphors and symbols, including the house, Statue of Liberty, coal mine, and the fragile "tinka," to illustrate the complex aspects of a woman's life. Her poetry skillfully conveys the conflict between conventional societal norms and the growing demand for individual liberation and equality. Ayan's work critically examines how patriarchal systems limit women to certain roles, but also highlights their strength and resilience. The recurring themes of sacrifice, emotional turmoil, and the relentless pursuit of dignity highlight her feminist perspective and support for redefining women's roles in society. Rashida Ayan's poetry reflects and challenges prevailing gender norms by showing the beauty and vulnerability of women along with their ongoing struggle against systemic injustices. This research emphasizes the impact of Ayan's writings on shedding light on the social and cultural challenges women encounter, while also inspiring a shared demand for empowerment and change in Urdu literature. Rashida Ayan expresses a strong story of women's independence, artistic freedom, and their crucial part in forming a fairer society through her emotional and thought-provoking poetry.
